The Idea
Heroes flounced.
Even I, a hardcore fan, can admit that. But I disagree that it should be rebooted. It was never broken beyond repair, it was simply written in such a way that attempts to fix what was broken led to new problems. The simple solution, for me, is to push the story into the year 2011 (the same time as the future from Five Years Gone), and start a new storyline that is more interesting than 'let's save the world' would be for another go-around.
This storyline is basically the old meet the new.
I believe that having the established characters move forward allows them to take on experience, to show the burdens of being one of 'The Evolved.' And at the same time, introducing a new generation of 'The Evolved' allows a contrast. Peter gets to see Sarah, and witness what he was like back in 2006; Claire gets to see Thomas, and witness his manipulation down a similar path to her; Mohinder can see Alexander as a version of himself, someone whose life was changed by the death of a parent. It also allows the new generation to avoid the mistakes of the old, a theme Heroes tried (and failed) to successfully pull off in Season Two.
But more than that, I want to show super heroism.
Whether you like Smallville or not, Clark Kent does heroic things. Heroes forgot to do that. I want to rectify that mistake by showing that superpowers CAN be awesome. I mean Hiro can teleport - it should be something he enjoys doing. That doesn't mean it's always going to be 'yay. powers', but I do think that there should be a sense of fun and wonder to a series such as Heroes. It should be superheroes versus supervillains, with the real-world elements magnified considering these people don't live in our world. That's one of the reasons for including Sarah, so someone with a new perspective can take this magnificent world they've created and say 'hey, no... the world doesn't need saving. It needs people to see how wonderful it is.'
And that's not to say I've forgotten the core elements.
We're still going to have a version of The Company. The core relationships will change, but it won't feel like a new show. It's designed as a reinvention of the old, a way for people to join it afresh AND the dedicated to feel it's a logical extension of Season Four. Characters such as Sylar and Matt aren't gone for good, they're simply taking a breather until it's the right time to show them again. Monica and Micah will return if the story is right. I'm keeping to established continuity, I'm not saying 'fuck everything and start anew', because that isn't good writing: it's a cheap cop-out.
This will be a love letter to the promise that Heroes showed, and at the same time a ruthless 'if it doesn't work, it's gone until it does' construct. There's no gimmicks. It's my vision of what I'd do with the property. The best comparison I can make is I'll be doing to this what Steven Moffat did to Doctor Who: namely moving bits and bobs to the left, and putting my personal touch on it.
